NPA August Roundtable: Is this regulation, or repression, of Charities by our Government?

Roundtable event

“These proposed laws are a case of extreme overreach and have no place in a democracy.” Alice Drury, Senior Lawyer, The Human Rights Law Centre.

How did we end up in this place?

Leading Australian charities have asked the United Nations to urgently intervene against plans by the Morrison government to shut down organisations engaging in advocacy; as prominent legal voices like the Law Council of Australia have also spoken out against the regulations.

If enacted, these regulations could essentially silence the voice of civil society, as well as placing a huge administrative burden on our charities.

Under the proposed rules, the ACNC commissioner could deregister a charity pre-emptively if they believe it lacks “internal control procedures” to demonstrate compliance with the new laws, or that it has not adequately documented relevant procedures.

The government is planning to table the regulations in parliament in August.

There’s a critical window to prevent these regulations from being passed. The Hands Off Our Charities Alliance is looking to work with charities, big and small from across the country, to protect our rights to serve our communities.

Join us to hear from some key individuals who are fighting the good fight on our behalf:

  • Human Rights Law Centre – Alice Drury. Senior Lawyer
  • Community Council For Australia – David Crosbie. CEO
  • St Vincent de Paul Society, Nat Council of Aust – Toby O’Connor. CEO
  • Hands Off Our Charities / Aust Democracy Network – Saffron Zomer
  • Oxfam Australia – Lyn Morgain. CEO

And be inspired to call on the government to withdraw these changes and end these unwarranted attacks on our sector!
